Amor Cubano

Traditional Cuban dishes are combined with mojitos at this upbeat place that also has live music.
2018 3rd Ave,
New York, NY 10029
(212) 996-1220
amorcubanonyc.com

Mojitos? Check. Live Music? Check. Delicious Cuban cuisine? Check. Drinks and food flow so effortlessly at this classic El Barrio restaurant that the only thing you will delay in asking for is… the check. Drop in for drinks or dinner on any energetic evening and you won’t want to leave. The live music gets people dancing, while the bartenders shake up cocktails rhythmically in sync with the beats of the conga drums and waiters twirl around tight spaces and crowds with dishes of food held high overhead, releasing rich aromas into the air. Seriously, on a hot Manhattan night, this place can look like a commercial shoot for Havana tourism. Transport to Cuba for an evening without the confusion of US- Cuba relations or explaining to customs in Havana that you are there to “support the Cuban people”.

This mom& pop pizza shop is so cute and cozy and the pizza is delish! Sit at the quaint bar and enjoy a cold Peroni or a rich cabernet, while the aroma of fresh baked pizza invites you to indulge in the doughy, cheesy bliss. Great for dining in with friends or take- out if you are nearby.

Bangklyn East Harlem

2051 2nd Ave,
New York, NY 10029
(646) 429-8128
www.bangklyn.com

Pat Bangklyn earned his name as a revered fashion designer in Bangkok, who would often combine New York style with salvage textiles. His clientele spanned from Asian breakdance crews to American celebs that sought out his designs for its retropolitan aesthetic. Pat moved to Brooklyn after years of being wooed by fellow fashion designers, though what he found in NYC was a new outlet for his passion of culture and trend: Food. Pat’s newest creative venture is Bangklyn East Harlem, an eatery that features South East Asian fare combined with nuances that are authentic to El Barrio. A Thai Style, Tamarind Coconut Market Soup, paired with a Topo Chico and finished with a fair- trade Colombian espresso is the type of menu diversity you can expect at this cozy spot. The open kitchen means you can watch the artist at work, as he is the one and only chef. Vintage clothing and bespoke denim pieces line the back wall of the eatery, while the speakers play a surprisingly balanced playlist of hip hop and traditional Thai music. Really quite the experience and must visit if you are looking for a hidden gem of New York City.

Bosie Bakery’s founder, Pastry Chef Damien Herrgott has quite the pedigree. A 3rd generation pâtissier from Besançon, France, Chef Damien began his career at the world famous Paris bakery Ladurée and later worked under Chef Pierre Hermé, considered to be one of the world’s best pastry chefs and industry influencers. Soaking up all that pastry knowledge from the world renowned chef, Chef Damien set his sights on New York City. After residencies as Executive Pastry Chef at Bouley and Michelin Starred restaurant La Goulue, Chef Damien ventured out on his own with Bosie Bakery. He now enjoys all the creative freedom of running his own pastry kitchen. One visit to Bosie Bakery and you will quickly fall in love with his creations. Smooth macarons, creamy tarts and rich chocolate biscuits are delicately served at this petite bakery, but the real magic happens behind the door near the register. Behind the store front is Chef Damien’s kitchen where he creates, recreates and experiments with modern twists on centuries old pastry recipes. Stop in for a box of pastries to bring home or sit and relax with one of their amazing herbal teas.

Business Support And Retention

In October, we conducted: a Commercial Leases atelier, at Sapoara; and in November,

we conducted: a LOANS 101 workshop at the MTA’s Second Avenue Subway Community Room. Both trainings provided valuable information about alternatives, options and possibilities within the subjects. At the end of each session, we responded to questions by merchants on specific cases. In December, we rested for the holidays, but January comes loaded with new Hospitality, Tax Management and Loans (Spanish) workshops. Please stand by for announcements on dates and times.

100 GATES PROJECT

In October, the last 2 gates of 2017 were completed. El Agave and Barberia Azteca now proudly display their own masterpieces, for after-hour enjoyment by residents and visitors. To commemorate this excellent work by 100G, we gathered at Mojitos on November 15 for a VIP cocktail. The event was attended by elected officials, representatives from NYC Small Business Services, 100 Gates officials, and several stakeholders of the District.

This program will reopen next year, around May 2018. As always, feel invited to apply, if you would like to be part of it. Applications are available at 100 Gates.

Colorful, upbeat restaurant offering Caribbean & Latin dishes such as mofongo & arroz con pollo.
2026 2nd Ave,
New York, NY 10029
(212) 595-7000

The Upper West Side institution has been serving delicious Latin cuisine for two decades and now we have the pleasure of enjoying their cooking in East Harlem. It is only fitting that Café Con Leche open a location in East Harlem/ El Barrio, a neighborhood known for its Latin roots. The menu represents cuisine from several Latin American and Caribbean countries, but does it so effortlessly. The flavors are phenomenal and the level of care that goes into each plate that leaves the kitchen is becoming rare among mid- size to larger Latin restaurants. Lunch, dinner, date or take- out, this place is not to be missed!

Oh, Café Ollin, how we love thee… NYC is filled with hole in the walls, hidden gems, off the beaten path type places. Ollin is the epitome of this category. A cozy little restaurant serving up authentic Mexican recipes with a few twists here and there (the Brody Torta is like a Hawaiian- Mexican mash up), with tons of flavor and sangria as fresh as it is strong. Great for groups, because if you come with a group you will basically have the whole place to yourself, or a date, so you can show off to your partner how you know the nooks and crannies of Manhattan.

Cleaning And Beautification

The multi-bike racks, requested from NYC, are not possible. They would be located near gas lines; in front of a doorway; or, too close to a hydrant. We are now reaching out to property owners for, alternative solutions to keeping bicycles off planter rails.

Have you noticed the Holiday Lights? Thanks to collaboration between EH 360 and The 116th initiative funded by Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito, we installed this year 16 strands along 116th Street (the largest number of strands ever). We feel proud of having these lights inspiring and enhancing our festivities.

You may have also noticed the brand new trash cans that now adorn and serve the Corridors. A contribution by EH360 to the Community. Let’s give them good use!!

Due to the upcoming of winter, planter’s beautification has been deferred until spring 2018.

This month, we restarted conversations with different schools, about the next phase of our “Keep It Clean” Program, which encourages elementary, middle and high school students, to develop ideas on how to minimize litter on the streets of East Harlem. We welcome the Manhattan Center for Science and Math, and Preparatory Academy.

LIMPIEZA Y BELLEZA

Coordination

This quarter, we continued to share activities and program goals with: Community Board 11; East Harlem Community Alliance; NYS Comptroller Office; NYC Manhattan District Attorney Office; 116th Street Block Association; Apple Bank; The Caribbean Cultural Center; The Manhattan Neighborhood Network; East Harlem Talent Network; and The People’s Federal Credit Union. From these meetings a truck-load of reciprocal opportunities was uncovered. We also attended the “Communication for the Travel Trade” workshop, sponsored by NYC & Co., where we created new synergies with several walking tour operators interested in East Harlem.

CITIBIKE completed by October 2017 their network of stations in East Harlem, drew some complaints from residents about lost parking spaces. Thirty eight bicycle stations are now fully operational and in use by avid visitors and locals. For an updated listing of locations visit (Locations).

Those strobing colorful 60 watt lightbulbs and the bright signage lets you know you are in EL BARRIO. Cuchifritos has been a staple in East Harlem since 1961. This walk- up counter eatery fries up meat and fish based patties so indulging you will ask for forgiveness, and stirs up juices and lemonades as sweet as your mother’s kisses. Classic Puerto Rican comfort food with origins from the Andalusia region of Spain, Cuchifritos is a term used to describe this style of fried treats. Stop in and enjoy some pieces of glistening guilty pleasures and brush up on your Spanish, while you ask the waitress the name of each food. Absolutely delicious, but not for the faint of hearts.

Benvenuto! When Raffaele D’Amore opened this wine bar and eatery in 2013, it was met with instant praise for his menu of Southern Italian dishes and stock of regional wines. The owner is also the bartender, and such a personal touch has its perks. Raffaele tends to guests with a romance in his tone as indicative as his last name. He takes his job serious, guiding new guests through the wine selection, but not too serious, as he will often attend to guests with a glass in hand. The space is intimate and great for date night or a stop- in after work. The espresso is bold, and the menu is brilliant. Our go- to; Pair the grilled octopus with a Chianti and finish your mean with an espresso.

Coffee is on point. The freshly brewed herbal teas are bliss. Not impressed yet? Bacon Maple Croissants
and gazpachos are just scratching the surface of the menu that will often rotate items with the seasons as every café should do. This place is always full of action. You can practically smell the wifi in the air with all the guests working away on laptops as Wu- Tang Clan blares through the speakers, while the walls display amazing pieces of artwork. Creative nights, craft beer brunches, wine after work… the events here are endless and that is what makes Dear Mama so unique. District Marketing

To keep attention on the District through our “Jumping” Santa, hosted by several participating businesses, as an opportunity to take a free picture with Santa, and for kids to receive gifts and candy. This pilot project was a FIRST on the Corridors. We hope to continue this tradition.

During this quarter we focused on creating attention onto the intersection of First Avenue and 116th Street. A series of musical events, in collaboration with local merchants added visibility to the area. As more and more merchants engage and continue to participate, we plan to connect focal points, all over the four Commercial Corridors for a global effect. The ultimate goal: Turning East Harlem into a “destination”. Let’s keep up the hard work!!

Craft brews pair with a cheese-focused menu at this packed spot on way-north Park Avenue.
1259 Park Ave,

Beer and Cheese lovers rejoice! We would like to say that the name explains it all, be it doesn’t. Yes, beer and cheese is what’s on the menu, but we feel that even the name of this hidden gem should have more pizzazz to it, like…The AMAZING Earl’s Beer & Cheese or EARL YOU’RE MY WORLD Beer & Cheese. Ok, maybe that’s too much. But seriously, no place does simple comfort food and beer pairings better, and in a dimly lit cozy backroom sorta- vibe complete with jinga and board games and plenty of craft suds to invoke philosophical conversations about the pleasures of life. Ok, we went too far again… It’s the beer taking over…

“Bottling”, as it’s known locally, is a favorite among craft beer lovers. In a neighborhood where bodegas have whole refrigerators dedicated to stocking popular import beers at near freezing temperatures (don’t’ get us wrong, nothing refreshes like a bottled beer hovering around 32°F), East Harlem Bottling Co. brings local beer culture to new horizons. Expect plenty of New York State crafts and small batch veterans, along with some newcomers to the craft beer industry. With 20 taps on constant and carefully curated rotation, you can stop into Bottling every day of the month (no judgement here) and never have the same beer twice. Pull a seat up at the bar or settle into a cozy corner by the exposed brick walls, while you pick away at unique dishes like beer battered pickles or Wisconsin cheese curds (think fluffy, fried cheese bites), while you sip on a beer you never heard of, from a place you did not know existed…

Mexican, French, Japanese and Mediterranean flavors all make their way into the menu, which has been revered by food critics and epicures. The space is adorned with Alebrijes (al-e-bri-hez), brightly colored mythical animals made of paper mache, masks of Luchadores or wrestlers, and framed artwork depicting the Agave cactus, the plant from which the spirits behind the bar get their spirit. The bar features an excellent selection of Mexico and California wines, Tequila, Mescal and Sotol, a spirit distilled in Northern Mexico and rarely ever found in NYC. Lion Lion meets all the downtown cocktail bar credentials, lucky for us the dab- smack in the middle of El Barrio. Treat yourself to an experience at Lion Lion. Enjoy the gorgeous backyard in the warmer months or cozy up at the bar for a full view of the alchemists of alcohol at work.

Two words that sum up this 2nd Avenue gem: TACO SALAD. Yes, the unlikely marriage of fresh vegetables and a crispy fried tortilla bowl topped with roast pork or braised beef. It’s like the hot, fitness girlfriend that marries her beer loving boyfriend because, well, some love- matches you just can’t explain, they just work. Lupita’s does not disappoint in this sense, and in a neighborhood where authentic Mexican tacos are taken very seriously, it’s refreshing to find a genuine Mexican restaurant that isn’t afraid to incorporate some tex-mex style dishes into their menu.

The dishes are packed with flavor! Don’t skip out on the Tum Yum soup if you are into spicy or the Thai Tea if you need something refreshing to wash it down.

Merchant Organizing

MO continues to be a hard milestone to overcome. Merchant’s low response and attendance to community issues is a reflection of the need for a better understanding about the power of working together. EH 360 will continue to push for alternatives that facilitate the organization of our District, to a more efficient operation. Our October gathering took place at Il Gnocchi Restaurant (at 118 East 116th Street). Hector Santana (MTA Community Liaison Officer was our guest speaker. In November, we gathered at Adar’s Lounge (1637 Park Avenue). Angel Garcia (People’s Federal Credit Union) who was our guest speaker, talked about loan opportunities for small businesses. Please make an effort to participate and be present on these opportunities to voice your concerns and interests. In December Rolando Gonzalez (Legal Aid Society) spoke at La Avenida, about legal issues concerning commercial tenants.

Exposed brick walls and rich aromas from the kitchen are the draw at this little known gem along the 116th street strip, known as Little Puebla, for its abundance of businesses and residence from the Puebla region of Mexico. Sizzling fajita plates are the go- to dish, while their mojito’s seriously are good enough to be their namesake. Oh, wait, it is. Take a seat at the outdoor patio in the warmer months and sip away the day or huddle inside to watch the soccer (fútbol) matches.

Patsy’s Pizzeria

This historic parlor offers coal-fired pizzas & other Italian mains in a comfortable setting.
2287 1st Avenue,
New York, NY 10035
(212) 534-9783

Patsy’s has been slinging coal fired pizza from its East Harlem location since 1933. Considered by historians to be one of the first Pizzeria’s to open in NYC, you can still get a thin- crust slice from the original coal fired oven at its walk-up counter. The dining room feels like a classic New York City Italian eatery with old world charm. Bring a date or bring the whole family! The waitrons at Patsy’s are equally as charming as the restaurant’s appeal, and will make you feel right at home. Heavy on the red sauce and hefty on the pasta, this place is old school all the way. Dine here for an evening of nostalgic charisma, great wine and lots of food… lots and lots of food.

Placemaking

This quarter 15 businesses benefited again from the Upper Grand Central pop up booth under the rail tracks at 125th Street (UGC). The booth is a great opportunity for any merchant looking for visibility and promotion, as that location is visited daily by thousands of commuters. As a reminder the booth is offered at no cost to merchants on the Corridors. Please do not hesitate to contact us at (347) 567-6376, if you want to benefit from this valuable marketing alternative.

Supporting District Marketing efforts, a series of musical events in December served to promote participating businesses (Camaradas and Prime One 16). We plan to continue organizing this type of events throughout the District.

Polash boasts the best Indian cuisine in the most unlikely of places. Situated on 3rd avenue, directly across the street from Hunter College’s East Harlem campus, it will usually crowd with students and professors around lunch hours, but the restaurant’s dinner menu is what really brings their kitchen to life! Curry, Tandoori, and Masala recipes are just the foundation of their menu. The Biriyani, Kurma and Malai dishes are packed with so much flavor… and their vegetarian dishes are a-maz-ing! Avoid the tourist crowds that wander Manhattan’s East Village Little India enclave and take a trip uptown to Polash. If you dine there, that’s great, keep it to yourself. If you have thoughts of dining there, fugedaboudit . There are 10 seats, all reserved for VIPs. But if you are lucky enough to score a reservation, also great, keep it to yourself. Downtown pretentious from the outside, but once you get inside it is clearly an Uptown party. This is Upper Manhattan’s flagship steak house. When you visit, expect a European sports car parked outside. Guests are greeted by a hostess, who is protected by a bodyguard. Don’t even ask to sit by the window unless you have an in… This section is reserved for VIPs (probably so they can keep an eye on their sports car). It is common to spot Professional sports players, celebrity entertainers and models all convening in the dining area, which has a clear view to the open kitchen where grill chefs are searing steaks and taming 4 foot flames. Don’t be intimidated by the atmosphere, Ricardo’s is just as much a local joint as it is a celebrity hotspot. You might even make a cameo appearance on Love & Hip Hop, should they be filming while you are gulping down margaritas like its Friday. Yes, what we just described is a typical midweek occurrence.

The dough is thick, the cheese is gooey and the sauce is fresh. No thin Neapolitan slices or deep dish Detroit style pies, just good quintessential New York City pizza.

Tastings Social Presents: Mountain Bird & Gaudir

There is so much happening at this revered kitchen tucked away on 110th Street/ Tito Puente Way, and none of it is to be missed. Tastings Social was founded as a premier Bespoke Catering & Events agency by Alexandra Morris, who worked alongside famed pastry chef Francois Payard. Kenichi Tajima, then Executive Chef to Payard’s and Morris’ Tastings Social, conceptualized Mountain Bird in 2013, occupying the tasting room of the catering company, and this East Harlem townhouse has been energized with dining excellence ever since. After receiving a Michelin nod and limitless praise from serious NYC epicures, the Mountain Bird kitchen made way for another super star, Executive Chef, Cedric Durand.
Chef Durand who also sits at the helm of Tastings’ kitchen, hosts a weekly Monday pop-up featuring Spanish cuisine and cocktail menus that transports guests to an evening in Barcelona, yet, while still in the ever- cultural El Barrio neighborhood of Manhattan.

Yura’s Blue Plate

2248 1st Avenue,
New York, NY 10029
(347) 703-0046

Yura’s has been an Upper East Side bakery and catering institution for decades. We only expect their East Harlem location will continue the legacy. The Breakfast/ Lunch eatery quickly became an El Barrio favorite when it opened, offering breakfast from 8am and lunch up until 4pm. Weekends are really busy at this super cute and cozy spot that covers all the breakfast and lunch basics. The pancakes have become especially famous in the neighborhood, as guests continually compare them to the taste and fluffiness of flan, a Spanish custard desert. With menu hits like these, Yura’s has won the hearts of locals and it probably won’t be long before visitors from other parts of the city are traveling uptown for these home- cooked flavors.
